Eliminate Complexity

Eliminate complexity and find your single source of truth! If you’re part of a growing organization, things can become more complex over time. From talking to other leaders, I’ve found that businesses get more complex as they grow, and you need to focus on reducing that complexity. So how do you do that? One thing that we’re working on right now at Service Express is measuring things. We have a Data Science team and performance measurement systems, both of which have grown over the years. As we review the metrics, we need to eliminate complexity and find a single source of truth. This is our process at Service Express:

  • Review metrics. Evaluate and remove the metrics you no longer use. Make sure to ask yourself if you really look at the data and apply it. If the answer is yes, great! If it’s no, get rid of it.
  • Find the single source of truth. When you measure too many things, you have different people drawing varying conclusions. This leads to different hypotheses regarding what’s going on, and while no one is in the wrong, this causes issues. Instead, we need one single source of truth. Get the right people looking at the right things, and they’ll come to the same conclusions.

We’re focused on these two steps as we update our key performance indicators. By eliminating complexities and finding the single source of truth, you can ensure that you’re focused on the right things that will help your organization take off. Try it out and let me know how it works for you!
