It’s mid-December, which means it’s goal-setting time. As we wrap up 2022 and think about 2023, it’s time to update our goals.
Here at Service Express, we’re getting ready for our Vision Talks. Every year, our employees have a Vision Talk with their leader to share their goals and vision for their future. We break them down as personal, professional and financial goals. December is a great time to look back on the year we’ve had, see what we’ve achieved, and ask ourselves what we want to accomplish in 2023.
I came across a great quote by James Clear, stating, “The question is not, ‘Will I succeed?’ but rather, ‘What should I attempt?'”
What a great frame of reference as we think about our goals for 2023. Are we playing it too conservatively? Are we only putting down goals that we know we’ll achieve? Do we have stretch goals? Jim Collins calls stretch goals Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAGs). We use this term at Service Express when talking about our stretch goals.
What’s our BHAG? A goal so scary we don’t know if we can get to it. We don’t know the plan but striving for it will stretch our thinking. Our mindset for what we think we can accomplish changes.
The same philosophy can apply in all areas of our lives: health, fitness, business, personal lives, etc. Let’s look back at our accomplishments and not create goals that we know we’ll succeed at. Make goals that you should attempt to achieve, and even if you fail, at least you’ve stretched yourself further than you have before. I think if we do that, we’ll all win in 2023!
