Approach Opportunities With Gratitude

Be thankful for your opportunities and approach them with gratitude!

Bryce Harper, who plays baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies, recently shared this sentiment. He hit a home run last weekend, propelling the Phillies into the World Series. A reporter asked him about his mindset going into that time at bat and how he dealt with the pressure. He said he was thankful for the opportunity and approached it with gratitude.

This mindset applies to so many different areas of our lives, whether you’re applying to college, looking for a new career opportunity, going for a promotion or winning a large sales deal. Whatever it may be, go into it grateful for the opportunity.

Reflecting on my career and my life, I promise you there’s nothing in life that’s a deal breaker: your dream job, the college you get into, the deal you sell. Nothing is make or break. If you get it, great, you’ll eventually be onto the next thing. If you don’t get it, there may be disappointment or frustration. I’ve experienced that myself, but you move on. It just wanted the right opportunity or the right time for you.

Many times, I’ve shared the story of companies I interviewed with prior to starting with Service Express. I was turned down for those jobs, which was disappointing and frustrating because they were good opportunities. Yet, had I gotten any of those jobs, I most likely wouldn’t be at Service Express today.

When I look back, I’m very thankful I didn’t get any of those opportunities. While I was disappointed at the time, it led me to where I was supposed to be. Now 25 years later, I’m still here!

Approach all these opportunities with appreciation, thankfulness and gratitude. Be thankful you have the opportunity to go after whatever it is, and win or lose, make the best of it. If you win, what does it propel you to do? If you lose, reflect on how you can improve and move on to the next thing. I promise you this mindset will calm you down and help you manage life’s ups and downs.
