Let’s talk about walking. Sahil Bloom said a lot of problems in life are solved by going for a walk. Are you stuck? Go for a walk. Are you tired? Go for a walk. Are you stressed? Go for a walk. Are you anxious? Go for a walk. Are you frustrated? Go for a walk. Many issues are solved by walking. One of the first comments said, “I’ve never gone on a walk and come back in a worse mood.” I can relate to that.
Even though it’s December, and winter is here in Michigan with short, cold, darker days, going for walks is a good practice. I love to do it whenever I can. During the week, I don’t get as much time. I get up when it’s still dark, I work out, and then I go to the office. By the time I get back, it’s dark again. But on weekends, I love going for walks with my wife and our dog. The fresh air—especially in winter—feels amazing because we’re inside so much. Even if it’s cold and windy, we just dress warmer, and it’s worth it.
Walking is also a great workout. Sometimes, I add a weighted vest to my walks for extra resistance. People in the neighborhood are used to seeing me with it now. I even have a big coat that fits over it, adding a little challenge to the walk.
Walking is also a great one-on-one time for my wife and me. It’s a chance for us to really talk and connect without the distractions of phones, TV or to-do lists. I feel like I’m a better listener and more focused on her on these walks.
Going for a walk has many benefits—both physically and mentally. So, even during the winter season, try to go out for more walks. If you’re feeling stuck, tired, stressed, anxious, nervous or frustrated—whatever it is—go for a walk and see if it helps.
