Leaders, there is so much going on in our lives right now, right? Whether at work or home, there is so much to do. One of the biggest mistakes we can all make as high-performing achievers is to try to do it all. You also don’t want your teams to feel like they need to do it all. James Clear says, “Before you ask, ‘What should I do today?’ ask yourself, ‘What should I remove today?’ Create the space you need to succeed.”
We’re well into the summer now, which is when this becomes important. July is a big vacation month, which means our calendars get shortened. This makes us focus and prioritize. When we’re out of the office or people we work with are out of the office, we can’t get everything done. You need to know who to connect with, what you need to work on and what needs to be your focus. When you go on vacation, it’s a great time to think about your schedule and prioritize.
Sometimes we may do well prioritizing when on vacation, but when we come back, our schedules fill back up again. That’s natural to have some catching up to do when you get back. However, I think we work with the constraints we give ourselves.
Prioritizing is something we work on at Service Express. We’re a growing organization, and a lot is happening and a lot that we could be doing. As an Executive Team, our focus right now is identifying our priorities so our teams can prioritize. We’ve created a priority list that we’re tracking. One of our rules is that if something is added to the list, something else has to come off. You can’t just keep adding to it, or it will become ineffective. You get better when you focus on priorities and get things done. Everyone feels better when progress is made, it creates momentum, and you get more done.
Focus on prioritizing this summer, and then take the lessons you learn moving forward. Continue to stay focused in the future during busy times and prioritize.
