I was listening to a pastor online recently, Francis Chan, someone I really enjoy. He made a comment that caught my attention. He said that the most unhappy people he’s met are those who focus mostly on themselves. That really hit home.
At Service Express, we’ve tried to build the company by focusing on people. We have a quote hanging in our executive area by Zig Ziglar, one that has guided me in my career. It says, “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.” I’ve found that to be so true.
When I’m feeling down, frustrated or challenged, I usually realize it’s because I’m focusing too much on myself and what’s not going right in my life. The way out of that mindset is to shift my focus to others and find ways to give.
At Service Express, this idea has been part of our culture since the early days. We strive to surround ourselves with people who want to be part of something bigger; people who want to create something special. We’re far from perfect, and we’re not for everyone, but we are committed to building a company centered around people.
Our core value is to cultivate a culture of growth that empowers our people to achieve their personal, professional and financial goals. That’s why we have Vision Talks with everyone in the company and offer growth-sharing programs. If we create an environment that helps our people succeed, nothing can stop us. No competition, market conditions, nothing.
It’s not always easy. We constantly battle the challenge of tracking performance and growing the business while staying focused on people. When we focus only on business metrics, we struggle. But when we get the right people in the right roles and align them with the right goals, that’s when the magic happens.
I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences on this!
